Rainham residents have been in contact with MP Margaret Mullane to ask her to take up a number of traffic issues that are causing real concern in the area.
The first of these relates to speeding vehicles in Wennington Road. Despite there being a 20 mph limit for the road, residents have reported many vehicles driving at speeds well in excess of the limit. Margaret contacted Havering Council to draw the problem to their attention and ask that consideration be given to put in place a plan to cut speeds.
In its response the Council said as well as the present traffic calming measures that are in place along Wennington Road residents may wish to take part in Community Roadwatch initiative. Community Roadwatch gives local residents the opportunity to work side by side with their local police teams and use speed detection equipment to identify speeding vehicles. Warning letters will be issued where appropriate and the information can help to inform the future activity of local police teams. To take part in Community Roadwatch, or to suggest a residential area where there are community concerns around speeding, residents may contact CommunityRoadwatch@met.police.uk.
Another group of local Rainham residents have been in touch with Margaret about continuing problems of traffic congestion that takes place on Sundays in connection with the boot sales at Willow Farm. Queues of cars block oncoming traffic causing a significant risk of accidents. Indeed, there was a fatal accident outside the Willow Farm on the A1306 some years ago.
Margaret Mullane has pursued this issue with Havering Council and the Police to get action to improve safety at this location. The Police have now got back to Margaret to say that the organisers of the car boot sale are trying to
manage the traffic situation by having one access in order for the opposing lane to remain flowing.
Margaret said “I am grateful to residents for bringing these matters to me. These issues are really important for the safety of the local area and reduce the risk of serious accidents.
