Margaret Mullane MP and Beam Park Labour Councillors Matt Stanton and Trevor Mckeever have called upon Havering Council to get to the root of the fires on the industrial sites off New Road in Rainham.
The latest fire on 31 December at a warehouse on the south side of New Road required over 125 London Fire Brigade firefighters and 25 fire engines to tackle the blaze with clouds of black smoke enveloping the area. Local roads were cordoned off and traffic was backed up on the A1306.
Cllr Matt Stanton, who lives close by the seat of the fire, emailed Havering Council’s Planning Enforcement and Environmental Health teams asking that they liaise with the LFB and investigate the site to check the cause of the fire and make sure that there are no unauthorized and unsafe activities on the land.
Margaret said “This isn’t the first fire around this location off New Road, so Cllr Stanton is right to call for checks to be made to ensure safety of residents in the area and prevent further disruption.
Fires such as this also put firefighters at risk of injury.”
