In just four weeks the ‘Bring Back Our Bobbies’ campaign has gained over 1000 petition signatures, calling on the Metropolitan Police and all necessary parties/authorities to return a permanent and visible police presence to transport hubs in Dagenham & Rainham, starting with Dagenham Heathway. There was a Police SNT Base at the Heathway until its closure in 2017.
Margaret Mullane organised the first day of action on Wednesday 19 July which saw 25 local businesses take petitions and hundreds of commuters sign up in support of the campaign, in addition to this there are now 15 residents collecting signatures on their street.

The campaign was launched following consultation with the community about their concerns in the area, and whilst there are many underlying causes of crime, it was felt visible policing would help improve the situation.
Margaret commented: “This isn’t about asking for more police or pointing fingers of blame. The community has one ask – a Police SNT Base to be returned to the Heathway. A shop front where existing neighbourhood teams can operate out of, so that there is a constant flow of police activity through the Heathway. Businesses in the area are all concerned about the sharp increase in both low level and serious violent crime and were only too happy to support the campaign.
“When speaking to people on our day of action the team heard many stories of anti-social behaviour, and worse, but the common theme was that people do not feel safe passing through the area. This must change. I am urging the whole community to get behind the campaign and together we can drive the change that Dagenham & Rainham deserves.”
